A video camera inspection of the lateral line from the house to the municipal main, revealing blockages, breaks, and root intrusion that a standard visual inspection cannot detect.
The sewer lateral (the pipe carrying waste from the house to the municipal main) is the homeowner’s responsibility, not the town’s. When it fails, the repair bill lands on you.
A sewer scope is a small price for that peace of mind. Sewer line inspections are cheap; sewer repairs can be extremely expensive, especially when a line has to be dug up beneath a driveway, a finished basement, or mature landscaping.
I run a camera the length of the lateral, from the house to the main, and record what it sees: blockages, cracks and breaks, bellied or offset sections, root intrusion, and outright collapse, none of which a standard visual inspection can detect.
Tree roots are the single biggest offender for blocking sewer lines. They find the smallest joint or crack, work their way in, and grow until the line is choked or broken. On an older property with mature trees, a scope is especially worth doing.
Most buyers have no idea of the age or condition of the line they are inheriting. A scope turns that expensive unknown into a documented, known quantity before you own it.
The good, the bad, and the costly.
